Ultherapy, Thermage, Shurink: which one do you actually need?

These are not competing versions of the same treatment. Ultherapy Prime and Shurink use ultrasound; Thermage uses radiofrequency. They reach different depths and address different problems. Which one suits you depends on why your skin is sagging, and that is what a consultation establishes first.

Ultherapy, Thermage, Shurink: which one do you actually need?

Patients often arrive having already decided on a device, usually from something they read online. The difficulty is that the same device is applied at different depths, over different areas, with a different number of shots depending on skin thickness and the pattern of sagging.

What the names mean

Two of these are global brands you may already know. Shurink is a Korean HIFU device, widely used here and less familiar abroad.

DeviceEnergyMainly addresses
ShurinkUltrasound (HIFU)Deeper laxity, a jawline that has lost definition
Ultherapy PrimeUltrasound (HIFU)Deeper layers, with imaging to guide placement
ThermageRadiofrequency (RF)Skin-level laxity, texture and fine lines

A table makes the choice look simple. It is not. Treating deep layers on thin skin can make the cheeks look hollow, and if volume loss is the main cause, a tightening device alone will not change much.

Why the cause matters more than the device

Collagen and elastin decline with age, so skin gradually thins and loses tension. At the same time facial fat shifts and reduces, and the structures supporting the skin loosen. These three do not progress at the same rate in any one person.

One person loses jawline definition first. Another sees the cheeks hollow and drop. A third notices texture and fine lines before anything else. All three say "sagging", but the approach differs.

When it is worth a consultation

  • The jawline is less defined than it was
  • Cheek sagging has become noticeable
  • Skin feels less firm overall
  • Fine lines and texture are a concern alongside laxity
  • You want a change that stays within a natural range

If you have recently lost weight quickly, or your face is swollen at the moment, it is more accurate to assess once things have settled.

What is assessed

  • Skin thickness
  • How far firmness has declined
  • Where the sagging appears
  • Face shape and fat distribution
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Previous treatments and when you had them

Previous treatment history matters most. If the same area had an energy-based treatment recently, leaving an interval is safer. Bring dates if you have them.

If you are visiting Korea for a short stay

Say so at the start. These treatments can leave temporary redness, a pressed sensation or mild swelling for a few days, so plan a buffer before flights or events.

Results from ultrasound and RF devices build gradually over weeks rather than appearing immediately. If you are hoping to see a change before you fly home, that expectation is worth raising in the consultation rather than after.

Treatment takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes depending on device and area. Cost varies with device and coverage, so it is confirmed at consultation.

Aftercare

Skin can feel sensitive or look flushed for a short period. Avoid strong massage and heat (saunas, hot compresses) for a while, and keep up moisturising and sun protection.

If pain persists, or a pressed sensation stays on one side only, have it checked rather than waiting it out.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the three is best?

They use different energy and reach different depths, so they do not rank against each other. What suits you depends on where the laxity is coming from.

Is one session enough?

It depends on your skin and your goal. It is common to review after an interval and decide from there.

Are these the same devices used in my country?

Ultherapy and Thermage are the same global brands. Shurink is a Korean HIFU device you are less likely to have seen elsewhere.

Can I combine two devices?

It can be considered after assessment. Spacing them out usually recovers better than doing both on the same day.
