Before & After Care

A week before the wedding: is a treatment still all right?

With one or two weeks to go, the question is what to have. The answer is that this is not the point to try something new; it is the point not to undo what you have built. Three months of careful preparation can be lost to one ill-fitting treatment in the last week.

Three things to avoid

A treatment you have never had before. The thought that one more thing might help leads people to try something for the first time just before the wedding. Treatments with a visible result, such as botulinum toxin or filler, are the usual candidates.

The problem is that you find out how your skin and muscles respond at this point, with one week to recover. A first toxin treatment can occasionally show slight asymmetry, a brow sitting differently, or an expression that reads as unfamiliar.

Topping up filler. A little more in the forehead, the lips, under the eyes or the nasolabial fold. Filler does not have a short recovery. Bruising and swelling are usually worst the next day and continue for a week; areas with thin skin take longer. Bruising on the neck, under the eyes and between the brows has been reported to last two weeks, and lips bruise readily with swelling for one to two weeks.

Lighting matters too. Wedding make-up can cover mild bruising, but studio and ceremony lighting is far brighter and more direct, and a bruise you thought was covered can show in photographs.

Filler also settles over time. It can look insufficient immediately and only reads as natural after two to three weeks. If a top-up was needed, before D-30 is the right time.

Raising the intensity. Even after adequate preparation, some people add a stronger treatment in the last week on the basis that more is better. That accumulates stimulus rather than effect. Adding a strong treatment on skin that has had repeated lifting or toning can produce reactions that were not there before: redness, minor breakouts, more stinging than usual.

In the run-up to a wedding, sleep loss, stress and hormonal change leave the barrier weaker than usual. Strong stimulus at that point takes longer to recover from.

The criterion is not whether it is new

Not every new treatment carries the same risk. Low-irritation care such as LED, light toning or radiofrequency diathermy has long-established safety and can be suggested at this point even for the first time.

The criterion is not whether it is new but whether the downtime is significant and the response hard to predict. The last week is for settling what has been achieved, not for stacking more.

What is possible and what should wait depends on how much time is left.

What the final week actually needs

The last week of preparation brings sleep loss, stress and irregular meals together, and skin condition drops sharply. Three things are needed: reducing the puffiness that appears suddenly, tidying a dulled tone and a blurred jawline, and stabilising the condition itself: with minimal bruising or downtime, because there is only a week.

Can I have a treatment I have never had before?

The type matters more than whether it is new. Treatments with significant downtime, or a first toxin treatment that needs time to settle, are not recommended. Low-irritation care such as LED or light toning can be done even for the first time.

What about toxin or filler?

Toxin needs about two weeks to settle, so a week before is not enough to show in the photographs, and there is no time to recover from the rare asymmetry. Filler bruising and swelling can last one to two weeks. Both are better completed before D-30.

So what can be done in the last week?

It is a point for tidying, not starting. Low-irritation care addressing tone, puffiness, the jawline and calming.

I have only a week and have prepared nothing

Possible, but the options are limited. Treatments with long recovery, such as for scars or pigmentation, cannot be started; the focus moves to tone, puffiness and the jawline.
