Juvelook and Olidia: what is the difference?

"I looked into collagen stimulators for a hollow anterior cheek — Juvelook, Olidia, Sculptra — and there are too many names to tell what suits." There are many names, but two families.

This difference in three-dimensional structure affects degradation rate and tissue response. Rather than one being better, they are materials that suit different situations.

It depends on the area and the situation

Collagen stimulators are mainly used in the anterior cheek, the lateral cheek and the nasolabial fold. The material that suits changes with the area.

  • Where hollowing of the anterior or lateral cheek needs volume and structural change, PLLA tends to have the advantage. Collagen generation through stimulation is stronger, which suits structural volume restoration
  • Where the aim is softening a line or a natural improvement in texture, as with the nasolabial fold, PDLLA suits well
  • If a nodule has been felt after a previous treatment, PDLLA is considered first. The particles are round on the outside with a mesh-like interior, and are reported to carry a relatively lower risk of nodules

No material carries zero risk. If you have had a nodule, the technique and the aftercare often matter more than the choice of material.

PLLA and PDLLA are the same material in a different arrangement.

Side effects to know before treatment

Side effectHow it appearsWhen it happens
NoduleA small lump felt under the skinInsufficient dilution, or injection concentrated in one place. The most common
AsymmetryThe two sides look differentDepth and amount differed even at the same site
Swelling, bruising, tendernessSwelling, mild bruising, tenderness for a few daysInherent to injection. Usually settles within one to two weeks

Most nodules resolve with time, but a large or painful one may need separate treatment.

The operator’s judgement drives the result

A collagen stimulator differs in character from an ordinary filler. The injected material does not create volume directly; it induces collagen production inside the skin.

So if something goes wrong you will not know at the time. It appears weeks later as a nodule or asymmetry.

PLLA must be adequately diluted just before treatment, injected so it disperses evenly, and massaged afterwards: and the massage drives the result. If one of those three is off, a nodule can be felt weeks later. PDLLA also has an appropriate depth and amount per area; get that judgement wrong and the effect does not appear, or asymmetry follows.

With the same material, the depth in the anterior cheek differs from the lateral cheek, and the nasolabial fold needs another judgement again. It is not a treatment that can be run to a single protocol.

Limits worth knowing beforehand

  • It is not immediate. Change generally appears gradually over one to three months. Not suited to a tight schedule
  • One session is rarely the end. Staging across sessions gives better satisfaction
  • Results vary considerably with constitution. Collagen-producing capacity differs between people, and age, skin condition, hormones and lifestyle all play a part

Because it grows slowly, more is not better. Overfilling leads to nodules and an unnatural contour.

Frequently asked questions

The same symptom can lead to a different plan depending on your skin. You can ask Dr Hong Seok-woo directly. Contact Somsei Clinic

Which is better, Juvelook or Olidia?

Not a hierarchy. They suit different situations. Structural volume restoration often favours PLLA; a natural improvement in texture, or concern about nodules, favours PDLLA.

When do results appear?

Generally gradually over one to three months. There is almost no change immediately after, which can be disconcerting. It works by inducing collagen over time.

How is it different from ordinary filler?

Ordinary filler creates volume with the material itself, filling immediately by the amount injected and degrading over time. A collagen stimulator does not create volume directly; it induces collagen production.

Is massage really necessary?

For PLLA, massage drives the result substantially. Confirm the method exactly before you leave.
