A chronic condition in which the pigment-producing melanocytes themselves are overactive.
Melanocytes pass melanin to surrounding cells through dendrites. In skin with melasma this transfer is more active than usual.
The aim is not to remove as much pigment as possible but to bring excessive activity back to normal. Strong stimulation can lead to rebound pigmentation.
