Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Brown marks left after inflammation. A temporary rise in pigment caused by irritation.

Different in cause and approach from melasma, where the melanocytes themselves are overactive. If skin with pigmentation is repeatedly exposed to UV, the mark can darken or last longer.
